What’s the difference between a zine and an artists’ book?
See for yourself during this open-house at the ARCMTL archive centre, where examples of both zines and artists’ books in all of their various flavours will be presented. Longtime veterans of the Montreal zine and artists’ book scenes, Louis Rastelli and Billy Mavreas will explore and explain the differences at the event as well as via a series of short Instagram Live broadcasts from 3 to 5 pm on the @volumemtl account.

Twenty-seven artists, both established and amateur, were selected and invited to create works inspired by Nelson Mandela, in front of a live audience at the Afromusée. Presentation by Guy Mushagalusa Chigoho, Director, Afromusée and preview of the exhibit catalogue followed by a guided tour of the exhibits.
The exhibit continues until October 21, 2023

During her residency at DARE-DARE, Annabelle Brazeau will explore notions of healing and compassion in the family environment. “Family history – drawn stories” will take the form of a micro-edition graphic novel produced in collaboration with a literacy group from the CÉDA organization in Little Burgundy. The artist will open a discussion on the great diversity of family realities in the neighborhood, then draw inspiration from these conversations to create a graphic novel.

As part of the group exhibition Exposer avec l’autoédition – Exposing the self, artists Audrey Beaulé, Dominique Rivard and Marie Samuel Levasseur as well as curator Janick Burn will be holding an informal discussion on the subject of self-publishing as an artistic practice. This open discussion will be an opportunity to discover the perspectives of these artists, who are exploring the accessible, intimate and subversive nature of publication as a printed object, a form of expression and a place of dissemination, turning it into an alternative exhibition space – an exhibit of art, but also of the self. The artists will also explore how self-publishing fits into their respective lives and communities and informs their current projects.
The conversation will be followed by the Montreal launch of Be Your Own Muse (2021) and the reissue of L’absence (2022 [2018]), two artist’s books by Dominique Rivard from Brise-glace (2020-2030), a ten-year self-publishing project with one title published every year.

This discussion will include veterans of the art book fair circuit imagining Canada’s place in the international art boo fair milieu in 2024 and beyond.
In 2023, only Volume 6 MTL was held in Canada, after a hiatus from the Vancouver Art Book Fair and the fairs that had taken place in Toronto and elsewhere before the pandemic. The international art book fair circuit, however, is still going strong. The panel will discuss where the Canadian fairs should position themselves in the near future in order to regain the momentum that was disrupted by the pandemic shutdowns.
